The world needs a feel-good story and I’ve got a perfect one for you! This is a story of two small communities coming together to collaborate to support a kid’s community baseball game, one that these kids will never forget. Why do all of this? Because we can and because these kids deserve it.
Picture it: it’s a steamy summer night at the Cecil Park baseball field. The sun is setting, the field lights are flickering on, the fireflies are rising from the field and 16 five and six-year-old kids are lining up for the biggest baseball game they’ve ever played. Everyone is here to celebrate these young athletes and to cheer and clap their hands wildly while they play their hearts out for the game that they love. The sound system crackles to life letting everyone know that it’s game time, the Fort Cherry chorus belts out our National Anthem while the local Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts present the American flag. The ceremonial first pitch is thrown out by the Cecil Twp assistant manager, Jacque King, and is caught by the Washington Wild Things mascot. It’s game time. The walk-up song for the first batter booms over the speakers. The first pitch is thrown and…. You’ll have to be there to get the full story!
Why is this special and why is this worth covering? The Fort Cherry School District is not wealthy and none of our fields have lights but we wanted this MLB-style event to be special for these players because they don’t get tournaments, playoffs, or all-star games. I reached out to Cecil Twp and they enthusiastically agreed to help us with our mission. Not only did they give us the use of their field but they offered us assistance with the concessions, contacts for materials, and for donations and also accepted our invitation to come and cheer on these little sluggers. This is a tale of neighbors supporting neighbors all for the love of the game and the joy of the children and in a world filled with division, it’s time we shed a little light on the goodness of togetherness. Be there to cover this game and while you write your story know that when people read it or watch it they’ll do so with a grin on their faces and a more positive outlook on the day ahead. Let’s spread the love of the game and the partnership of neighbors.
